art of eating

Shouldn’t art be an every day thing? I don’t mean “everyday”, I mean “every day”. I found this handmade flatware the day before Thanksgiving, and just fell in love with it.

Yeah, I know I didn’t arrange it properly for the photo - I’m into art, not so much etiquette. The brand is Gourmet Settings

I almost didn’t, but since we needed new flatware - ours was getting worn out, but mainly, we just didn’t have enough pieces - I thought why not? Who knew that flatware could make me so happy? Should I be allowed to love my flatware this much?

Creativity Question: What is a simple pleasure in your life that may not be necessary, but just makes life a little sweeter?

Obviously, I can appreciate simple things - little things. And, while they aren’t necessary for living, I wonder if they aren’t necessary for that little dash of happiness - that spoonful of sugar (to help the medicine go down). Your thoughts?

I love this set. It is actually the second time I’ve seen it. The first was at my friend Emily McPhie’s house. She is the artist who’s web site I sent you a while back, so you are in good company.

As far as simple pleasures go, mine change all the time. Sometimes it is pretty toenails, sometimes nerds candy. Lately I’ve really liked pretty smelling candles. I think fresh cut flowers in my house is my favorite though. I don’t always have them, but when I do my outlook is always just a bit more optimistic and I am in a much better mood.

I LOVE this set!! Where did you find it? I absolutely love things that are different and not traditional. I think I would have bought it too if I had seen it… maybe I will go and buy it. :)

    Melissa,

I bought the flatware set at Marshalls - they still had some left, but not many. But, if you go on the Gourmet Settings website, you can find other places where they are sold. I actually think Target might have some of the pieces, too, but I don’t know if they have the whole set (maybe just the tiny serving forks and spoons). I also bought the “Avalon” hostess set. It “goes”" but without being too matchy-matchy.

Elise, I love your comment - my simple pleasures change all the time, too. But, really, if I make myself get out of the house and go for a walk, especially in a wooded area, that will really make a huge difference in my mood. It just puts me at amazement and awe and makes me really happy. Maybe I should buy a couple plants for the house - I think that would help.

It is beautiful! I love things like that. I love to look at art–any art, and I wish I had more in my house…one day when I can afford it! I love your website too! So cute.

I need new flatware too. We used to have ten forks, but somehow we’re down to four, and only two of them match. I can’t figure it out, because it’s not like we ever take them out of the kitchen. Maybe the kids are feeding them to a fork-eating monster in the basement.

One of my simple pleasures is paper and hand-made books. (Unfortunately, simple does not equal cheap.) I especially like hand-made paper, paper with unusual texture, and books - even mass-produced ones - made with high-quality paper. I also like rare books and manuscripts, but I don’t know that I would call that a “simple” pleasure. :)

P.S. That flatware is SO you. Utilitarian, yet organic.

That flatware is way cool… I’m wracking my brain to think of my simple pleasure kinds of things…hmmm…I know this is kind of a kitsch-y kind of a thing but it really brings me so much joy–my Willow Tree figurines and the Nativity Set…I just bought the last pieces for the Nativity and I love to just look at the gentle, perfectly-posed pieces portraying one of the most miraculous events the world has ever known. The figures themselves are so simple–faceless and with minimal detail but it’s just enough to express so much that means so much. That fascinates me and inspires me in my own artwork.

I LOVE the flatware! It feels balanced in the hand. :-)

    My simple pleasure? Napping. :-)

    Love you,

I too think the flatware is very you. I think it is awesome that your husband cares enough about the simple things in life that bring you joy and made a comment saying so. My simple pleasure is finding partyware on clearance…or finding anything I could use on clearance at Target.

Amy- the flatware is awesome! My simple pleasure. Stupid, but I love the pulpy overpriced tropicana orange juice. And sorry again I couldn’t get together to make the little photo clips. This month has NOT been my month, but we’re on the mend, and things are getting so much better. I really want to make some though. Let me know if you’re still up for it. Drop me a line at my blog or email.
